· Contact (call, write, or fax, but not e-mail) your California State Senator andAssembly person to express your support for Senate Resolution 7 and House Resolution 5. The state Supreme Court is considering a legal challenge against Prop 8 that the measure should be considered a constitutional revision (which requires 2/3 vote of the legislature) and not a constitutional amendment (which can bypass the legislature and requires simple majority of voters). These resolutions, sponsored by State Senator Mark Leno and State Assemblyman Tom Ammiano propose to make the official position of the state that Prop 8 is a revision and therefore improperly bypassed the legislature. Although a largely symbolic measure, courts do look at legislative intent when making legal interpretations so let's make the legislative intent clear.
· Contact (call, write, or fax, but not e-mail) your representatives in the United States Senate and House of Representatives and urge them to repeal DOMA, the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act". Also contact President Obama and urge him to keep his campaignpromise to repeal DOMA. Because of DOMA, same-sex marriages in California would not be valid in the eyes of the federal government regardless of Prop 8. Even worse, DOMA denies at a federal level the the rights granted by domestic partnerships and in many cases causes those legal protections to vanish when people cross state lines. Proponents of Prop 8 claimed to support civil unions, and repeal of DOMA is the only way to make civil unions or domestic partnerships meaningful--so let's put that support to the test and push to repeal DOMA in 2009.
